Have you ever tossed just anything on and not bothered to consider the consequences -- like seeing that cute guy you've been crushing on in that exact moment you were out in your old painter's shirt? Well, that's sorta of like the circumstances when you blindly toss away an old cell phone.
To help you better understand important media safety principles, we look at cell phone recycling and give you teens some info about how you can help us raise awareness around this issue. While cell phone recycling may not be as newsworthy as other media safety topics such as cyberbullying and sexting, realizing that nearly another 20,000 cell phones weren't properly collected or simply tossed away while you read this article kind of brings home the importance of this issue.
Approximately 100 million cell phones go obsolete every year through upgrades or damage. Unfortunately, less than 10 percent of those phones are recycled, put to other use or disposed of properly. If just thrown into the trash, this means the phone will sit in a landfill, leaking toxins that can pollute the surrounding soil and water with toxic materials such as arsenic, lead and zinc.
Recycling Works!
When recycled properly, your phone can be broken down back into raw materials, which lessens the need for those materials to be mined from the Earth again. And other recycled phones are fixed and donated to charities like women's shelters for emergency use!
