Teen Unemployment is Sky High

Teens are finding it tough to find jobs - start looking now for the Holiday season

Teen unemployment in the United States has hit 25.9% – that’s more than two and a half times the adult unemployment rate!

According to the Wall Street Journal, “being shut out of the labor market early in one’s career” can have a lasting effect on your future earning power – a negative one. In other words, the people who start to build their resume early tend to have longer careers with bigger pay checks.

Jobs for teens this Holiday season are taking a big hit. Companies aren’t looking to hire as many people this year and there’s a lot of competition from unemployed older workers.

So, if you want a job, you’ve got to play you’re 'A' game now! Here are some suggestions from the experts:

  1. Start looking for Holiday jobs now! Businesses are going to hire later in the season this year, but you need to have your resume out there early to get on top of the pile.
  2. Have someone proofread your application. Applications with even small errors will get tossed.
  3. Appearance and attitude will help you stand out. Dress appropriately for the job and show enthusiasm. Be on time for interviews! Show that you have a good work ethic and will take the job seriously.
  4. Be flexible with your schedule. Don’t make demands about the times you can and can’t work.
  5. Write a thank you note after an interview. This shows maturity and that you’re serious about the job. (Tribune Media Services)

Don’t forget that landing a job - and showing that you’re a good employee -for the Holidays may lead to a job for next summer or beyond.

Can’t find a job? Start building your resume with volunteer work or internships. They may not pay now, but they will later. You’ll have good experience and skills that will help you land your next paying gig.
