Get Ahead with Summer College Classes

Consider attending summer school sessions locally or at colleges and universities nationwide for early college credits

by Liane Membis

Sure, you just got out of school and you're ready for a break. But are there courses you weren’t able to take? Or subjects you’re passionate about you’d like to explore on a higher level? Then hink about spending your summertime in school!

Opportunities

There are summer programs, sessions and learning opportunities across the country. Check out local universities or tap into programs at colleges across the nation. Many universities, from state schools to the Ivy League, have programs that let you focus your attention on the arts, sciences, literature, music, dance and so on.

Why to Consider Summer School

  • Challenge Yourself: You might find doing college-level work as hard as solving a Rubik’s Cube. But it can enhance your education as you challenge yourself to think at a higher level.
  • Gain In-Class and Out-of-class Experience: Many summer programs require a lot of work, including research, field trips or jobs. These forms of hands-on learning give you an edge in the classroom as you couple your experiences with what you learn in school.
  • Make Your Transcript Outstanding: Many summer programs earn you college credits before you graduate high school. This is a good feature to have on your transcript. By being willing to go above and beyond and giving up part of your summer to take classes, you will stand out among many others when you apply to colleges.
