5 Tips for Choosing the Right College

Choosing the right college is a big decision but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here's five ways to choose the best school for you!

Picking a college to spend the next two to four years of your life is definitely a major decision. But don’t fret too much -- by knowing the right questions to ask, you can determine the best college for you. Here’s five to start with:

  1. Academic interests: You don't have to know your major yet but take time to make a list of your interests and be sure they’re offered.
  2. Extracurricular: Education also happens outside the classroom. Determine which schools offer athletic, social or study-abroad opportunities that excite you.
  3. Size: Larger schools often offer more choices in majors and extracurricular activities; smaller schools frequently offer closer contact with faculty and staff.
  4. Location: Do you prefer a city with lots to do? Or is a contained, quiet and walkable campus more your speed? Is it important to be close to home and family – or are you ready to live on your own now?
  5. Residence: Living in a dorm is a great way to make friends and be plugged into the social scene. But living at home and commuting to school may be a better economic decision – or just your preference.

Ultimately, you must honestly assess yourself and your needs. This decision is more personal than which school has the best football team, where your friends are going or even what you plan to be when you grow up Most importantly, it’s okay to base part of your decision on what feels right.
