For incoming freshman, high school can be terrifying: a new place, full of new people who don't know you but will judge you anyway. In reality, it’s not so bad. You'll also make lasting memories and new friends. Best of all, you finally start being recognized as a young adult and gaining more privileges and responsibilities.

So relax, it’s all good. And review these 10 tips for a successful start to your high school career.

  1. Be Healthy: Cafeteria food is cafeteria food whatever grade you’re in. Fortunately, most high schools offer a better variety of dining choices. By eating a healthy meal, you energize your brain and body and perform better in school.

  2. Be Accountable: Want to win teachers over? The best tip is to be a good student. Be on time, do your work, and don’t mouth off. You may be surprised how well you do by simply showing up and doing the work you're assigned.

  3. Be Yourself: Anyone can spot a fake from the real thing. Don't be afraid to give your opinion.

  4. Be Bold: Lunch can be scary your first week. If you don’t see any friends, sit with someone who’s eating alone. Strike up a conversation about classes, current events, whatever. It takes a little courage but you may make a new friend.

  5. Be Flexible: You’ll enjoy new experiences in high school that change you for the better. Just be wary of things you know are bad for you. Remember, everyone around you – students and teachers – are changing and growing together.

  6. Be Secure: Nobody wants to tote around a backpack full of books (Hunchbacks are not cute!). Use your locker between classes and keep it locked! Theft is common at some schools.

  7. Be Confident: Don't believe the hype about seniors and juniors trying to prank you. But don't trust everything you hear from them either. Look up to positive upperclassmen as role models.

  8. Be Extra: Extracurricular activities help you “test the waters” and discover interests. If you find an activity you like, try to stick with it. When you apply to college, admissions officers look for extracurricular involvement.

  9. Be Studious: High school work isn’t easy, especially if you’re taking honors or advanced placement courses. Allow ample time in your schedule to study, do assignments and review. This also helps build study strategies vital for succeeding in college.

  10. Be Resourceful: If you need help, ask! Seek guidance from teachers, staff, counselors, who can provide you with resources and learning opportunities. Believe it, they want to help you.
