Boys & Girls Clubs are jumping for joy now that it (unofficially) appears a new world record for jumping jacks has been set!
It's not officially counted! But you're not "jumping" to conclusions if you assume that Boys & Girls Clubs now hold one world record!
On March 22, some 20,000 youth, staff and volunteers from more than 1,000 Boys & Girls Clubs across the country and on military bases overseas attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the most people doing "jumping jacks" – or "star jumps."
Jumping jacks are called star jumps in some countries because the arms, legs and head form a five-pointed star. To break the current record, more than 278 individuals were needed to complete the attempt. While the official verdict will come from Guinness in a couple of weeks, all indications are that, with thousands taking part, the record has been broken with plenty of teens to spare, Jack!
As part of National Boys & Girls Club Week (March 20-26), Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) embarked on this initiative with its Clubs across the country through the organization’s Triple Play program. This program, supported by founding sponsor, Coca-Cola, and the WellPoint Foundation, encourages kids to eat healthier, become more physically active and increase their ability to engage in healthy relationships.
"We are so proud of the nationwide turnout for the record-breaking attempt," said Dominique Dawes, Olympic Gold Medalist and co-chair of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. She was on hand at a Boys & Girls Club in Los Angeles to lead the star jumps exercise. "No one needs fancy equipment, specific clothing or a gym membership to get out and exercise. Some good old-fashioned jumping jacks can do it!"
